Celebration of Life for Kaicho Steve Curran

Celebration of Life for Kaicho Steve Curran

The Curran family and North End Karate community invite you to join us in celebrating the life of Kaicho Steve Curran.

Kaicho Steve founded the Academy of Steve Curran Karate in 1977 and spent nearly five decades teaching, mentoring, and inspiring generations of martial artists. Through his leadership, friendship, humor, and dedication to his students, he created far more than a karate school—he created a family.

We hope you will join us to share memories, reconnect with fellow students and friends, and honor the extraordinary legacy Kaicho Steve leaves behind.

The celebration will be held Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 4741 N. Baltimore Street in Tacoma.

All who knew and loved Kaicho are welcome.

Announcing the Passing of Kaicho Steve Curran

It is with a very heavy heart that I share the sad news that Kiacho Steve Curran passed away on the morning of May 11.

Kiacho meant so much to so many of us. Through his teaching, leadership, friendship, and dedication to the dojo, he touched countless lives over the years. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know and train with him.

If you would like to send cards, notes, or messages of condolence, please send them to the dojo and I will make sure they are delivered to Suzanne. I know she would greatly appreciate hearing your kind words, memories, and stories about Kiacho and the impact he had on your life.

Please also visit our Facebook page to view a video montage celebrating Kiacho’s life and memories at the dojo.

I will share additional information regarding services and memorial arrangements as it becomes available.

Oss Everyone!

Hanshi Lyle here.

First, I would like to say thank you for all the support and love you have shown Kaicho throughout the years and especially in this last week leading up to his retirement. It was a wonderful example of the respect and positive attitude that makes our dojo so special. Moving forward, I am looking forward to continuing in the same tradition. Class schedules and belt requirements will remain the same for the time being.

As you may guess, it takes a little time to make the changeover behind the desk and we should have everything back up and running by the end of this week. So, thank you for your patience. Soki Suzanne will continue to run the paperwork and payment side of things and for the time being, the name of our dojo, phone number, email address, and wifi password will remain the same. Previous payments and contracts will also be honored.

For new payments, we are available to take payments by cash and check immediately. If paying by check, please make payment to the order of North End Karate Llc. If using a credit card, we are currently able to send you an invoice through our payment system, Talech, that you can pay online, however, in person credit card payments will need to wait until our replacement card reader arrives on Wednesday, June 4. Again, thank you for your patience and understanding.

Some other notes: June 1st dojo T-shirts may be worn instead of uniform top, but remember that if you are taking your belt test you need to wear the uniform top.

Next promotion test is on Friday June 6th at 5:00pm. If you are planning to test please put your name on the sign-up sheet by the front door. This is important so that the instructors can give you extra attention. Also remember, if you are going up that you are welcome to come in as much as you wish the week before the test to be sure to show your best for the test! Remember to bring your sparring gear and to have your partner lined up.

I look forward to an exciting future with each and every one of you!
